Last time we discussed how tech trends in the office could change our daily activities. IoT helps us to improve our work-life balance in several ways. But even when we’re not working, we will feel the impact of technology in our daily routines. Retailers, for instance, will design totally new kinds of shops. Find out which 3 trends will impact the way we shop.

1. Customer experience

It all starts when you enter the shop. Beacons will serve up information on frequent store visitors, such as purchase histories and personal preferences. This will help a sales associate to deliver a high-touch service to their most valuable customers. Ok, but beacons ? Well ... small, wireless devices that are reaching out to customers by Bluetooth.

Once you’re in the shop, digital signage will push customized content to stores in real time. Maybe we’ll receive personalized digital coupons? But this will not convince all customers. Most of them will use their smartphone to scan items and call up reviews on social media. We will be able to shop faster as smart mirrors will allow us to try on different clothing virtually. No need for queuing at the cashier neither. Checkouts can be done without human interaction by automatically scanning the products as customers walk out of the store.


2. Supply chain

Smart shelves will detect which products are almost sold out. Low-turnover items on the other hand will be promoted as managers could begin to adjust pricing in real-time. As a result, prices will be more consistent between online and brick and mortar stores.This means more time to spend interacting with customers, improving the in-store experience even further.


3. New channels = new revenue

Imagine all your household appliances connected to the Internet. Thermostats are a great example. They track your behavior and adapt the temperature accordingly. No need for manual programming anymore. Shops as “Home Depot” already store more than 600 smart products. Interesting detail: These are high-margin product categories.

Already, some retailers go one step further and build entire platforms based on this kind of domestic data. This results in e-commerce channels, offering services such as automated replacement of products based on the customer’s consumption. Imagine a medicine cabinet connected to the internet, which replenishes toiletries automatically. By a connected pantry, basic groceries will arrive when needed. Even better, it will suggest recipes based on the available ingredients.
